What Sunflowers Teach Us About Standing Strong https://lindaholmancoaching.com/what-sunflowers-teach-us-about-standing-strong/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 15:06:20 +0000 https://lindaholmancoaching.com/?p=3003 Read more at Linda Holman Coaching

a field of sunflowers all face the sun…

Have you ever noticed how a field of sunflowers all seem to face the same way? I found myself captivated by this simple detail—and then I realized they had three powerful lessons to teach us about resilience and leadership.

Your circle isn’t just about companionship—it’s about direction. The truth is, you rise (or stall) with the people around you. So let’s talk about three intentional ways to build a community that energizes, empowers, and aligns with your vision.

1. Follow the light, even when negativity pulls at you.
It’s easy to get stuck in comparison, doubt, or frustration. But sunflowers don’t waste energy on shadows—they turn toward the sun. We can do the same by choosing to focus on possibilities, gratitude, and what is working. Your energy follows where you place your gaze.

2. Dare to face a different direction.
Not every sunflower in the field faced the same way. A few leaned out, almost defiant. And isn’t that like leadership? Maybe you’ve felt pressure to conform, to “fit in,” or to keep the peace. Yet growth often comes from turning your face a new way—even if it feels scary. Courage is choosing the path that aligns with your values, not just the crowd.

3. Stand tall and proud.
When challenges pile up, it’s tempting to shrink back or play small. But have you ever seen a sunflower slouch? They rise tall and open, as if declaring: I belong here. The way we carry ourselves—shoulders back, head lifted—creates confidence, both inside us and in how others see us.

IMG 6078 768x1024

Like sunflowers, we’re meant to rise, reach, and grow—choosing light, courage, and strength in every season.

So, which sunflower lesson do you need most right now? 🌻

When life gets overwhelming, many women instinctively pull back.

When life gets overwhelming, many women instinctively pull back. We isolate. We power through. But that’s exactly when we need community the most.

Your circle isn’t just about companionship—it’s about direction. The truth is, you rise (or stall) with the people around you. So let’s talk about three intentional ways to build a community that energizes, empowers, and aligns with your vision.

1. Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you.
Create your personal board of directors—those trusted few who cheer you on, challenge your thinking, and model the behaviors you aspire to. Seek out people who motivate and energize you, even if they’re different from you. Especially if they are.

2. Identify relationships that fuel your energy.
Not all connections are created equal. Who leaves you inspired, not drained? Make time for those people. When you’re intentional about scheduling time with energizers—those who matter most—you build emotional reserves that carry you through challenges.

3. Build connections with those who align with your goals.
Who’s in your corner helping you grow? Reach out to someone you admire. Invite them to connect. Don’t wait for permission—lean in. A strong, aligned community provides not just support but clarity and accountability for where you’re headed.

Better Together 1024x576

Studies show that when women feel insecure or overwhelmed, we often retreat. But the real power move? Leaning in, not out. Building your community isn’t just a strategy—it’s a lifeline for growth.

So, who’s in your circle—and are they helping you become who you’re meant to be?

Let’s explore how to build your community with purpose. Schedule your clarity session today.

Say “Yes” to What Matters—And “No” Without Guilt

Ever feel like you’re constantly pulled in different directions, saying yes to things that drain you? Setting boundaries isn’t about shutting people out—it’s about making space for what truly matters. When you’re clear on your priorities, you can confidently decide what deserves your yes and learn to say no without guilt.

Let’s break it down into three key areas:

1. Decide What Truly Deserves Your “Yes”

Not everything is worth your time. The key to setting strong boundaries is getting crystal clear on your priorities. Before committing to something, ask yourself:

✔ Does this align with my values and goals?
✔ Will this add joy or fulfillment to my life?
✔ Do I truly have the time and energy for this?

If the answer is no, then it’s okay to let it go. Saying yes to everything means saying no to yourself. Choose wisely.

2. Learn to Say “No” with Confidence and Grace

Before you say yes to anything, pause. Give yourself time to consider if it truly aligns with your priorities. A simple, “Let me think about it and get back to you” creates space to make an intentional decision.

And when you know it’s a no, here are three ways to say it with confidence:

🚫 I appreciate you thinking of me. This year, I’m focused on other priorities.
🚫 I’d love to help! Right now, I don’t have the capacity to give it the attention it deserves.
🚫 Although that sounds like a great opportunity, but I’m committed to other causes.

No guilt. No over-explaining. Just clear, confident boundaries.

Ok To Say No 2 1024x576

3. Protect Your Time and Energy

Your time and energy are your most valuable resources—treat them that way. Be intentional about what you allow into your life.

⏳ Calendar Blocking: Schedule time for both work and personal priorities—then protect it like any other important meeting.
⚡ Know Your Peak Productivity Hours: Work when you’re at your best.
👥 Be Mindful of Energy Drainers: Limit interactions with people who deplete your energy.

💡 What’s one boundary you need to set this week? Drop it in the comments—we’re in this together! 💪

Show Yourself Some Love

Do you give all your energy to others? Are you always putting yourself last? It’s easy to get caught up in work, family, and responsibilities, leaving little time for yourself. Showing yourself love isn’t selfish—it’s essential. When you take care of yourself, you have more energy, patience, and strength to support others. You also lead by example, showing those around you the importance of self-care.

Hand Heart

Here are three simple ways to prioritize yourself and nurture your well-being:

1. Prioritize Self-Care

What’s one thing you can do to take care of yourself? Schedule that massage, sign up for a yoga class, or take 10 minutes to journal. Small acts of self-care remind you that you matter too.

2. Do Something You Enjoy

Think back to what you loved as your younger self. Was it playing games, dancing, laughing with friends, or walking in nature? Reconnect with what brings you joy and make space for it.

3. Speak to Yourself with Kindness

That inner voice can be your greatest cheerleader or toughest critic. Practice positive self-talk by shifting negative thoughts into affirmations. Try this: “I am worthy of investing in myself.”

If you don’t have one of your own, borrow this until you find the words that resonate with you.

10222024 300x300

Your challenge: Pick one of these self-love actions and commit to it. When you prioritize yourself, you show up as your best self for others. How will you show yourself love today?

Simple Steps to Clear Your Mind, Set Goals, and Thrive

Have you ever felt like you’re juggling so much that you’re not truly making progress? Sometimes, the key to thriving isn’t doing more—it’s focusing your energy on what matters most

6 1024x576

One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is how focus can transform not just your productivity, but your clarity and sense of purpose. It starts with intentionally directing your energy, and it involves three simple yet impactful steps.

1. Get Organized

Clutter—both physical and mental—can drain your energy. Start by creating a clear environment that supports your goals. Whether it’s decluttering your workspace or organizing your thoughts through journaling, meditating, or tracking your triggers, give yourself the gift of space to think clearly and focus.

2. Set Meaningful Goals

What’s the vision you have for your life or work? Picture it clearly. Then, break it down into actionable steps. Focus on a few meaningful priorities rather than spreading yourself too thin. When you set smaller milestones, like quarterly goals, you create momentum and ensure steady progress toward your vision.

3. Cultivate a Positive, Growth-Oriented Mindset

How you speak to yourself shapes your reality. Pay attention to your inner dialogue and start replacing self-doubt with encouragement. Growth begins with believing in your ability to thrive and reframing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.

A Journey 4 1024x576

As I often say, “We’re all on a journey.” A while ago, I set out to complete a century ride—100 miles in a single day. It didn’t happen overnight. It took many training rides, countless hills, and consistent effort to build my strength. When my grandson asked, “How’d she do that?” the answer was simple: one mile at a time.

Focused energy is a game-changer. It allows you to approach your goals with clarity and purpose. You don’t need to tackle everything at once or have all the answers today. Whether you’re pursuing a major career milestone, personal achievement, or simply striving for balance, progress happens one mile, one step, one action at a time.

What’s one mile you can take today toward the life you envision? Write it down and commit to it.

Let’s focus on what matters and thrive—starting right now.

Refresh Your Perspective and Rediscover Your Path

Sometimes, the hardest part of making progress is knowing where to start. It’s easy to see others making strides and feel like you’re standing still. The truth is, each journey is unique. What works for someone else may not align with your path—and that’s more than okay.

Recently, I’ve taken time to reflect on my own growth in areas like business, knowledge, confidence, and relationships. Growth often brings challenges, yet it also delivers clarity and a renewed sense of purpose.

One practice that has kept me focused is choosing a personal theme. Having a theme provides direction, helping you prioritize what matters most and avoid distractions that don’t serve your goals.

7 1 1024x576

Here’s my wish for you as you take your next step:

  • Confidence: Make bold choices, embrace your strengths, and step into opportunities.
  • Relationships: Nurture meaningful connections and appreciate those who support you.
  • Progress: Align your daily actions with long-term goals to create momentum.
  • Joy: Intentionally seek out moments of joy—it’s what makes the journey worthwhile.

Refreshing your perspective can open the door to exciting possibilities. Take time to reflect, realign, and step forward with intention.

Journaling: A Path to Self-Discovery

Have you ever wondered what message your mind is sending you? Our thoughts, feelings, and experiences often hold valuable insights—but they’re easy to overlook in the rush of daily life. Journaling offers a simple yet powerful way to explore these insights and gain clarity.

Sometimes we feel stuck, unsure of how to move forward. The act of putting pen to paper can release that energy, giving your thoughts a place to land and creating space for new ideas and perspectives to emerge.

10 1024x576

Taking 20–30 minutes to journal can help you process challenges, celebrate successes, and discover what truly matters to you. It’s a practice of curiosity, inviting you to learn more about yourself.

Here are some prompts to help you get started:

  • What recent accomplishments are you most proud of?
  • Which activities energize you? Which ones feel draining?
  • What are you most grateful for right now?
  • Think about a challenge you’ve faced recently. How did you respond, and what did you learn?
  • What brings you joy, and how can you intentionally create more of it?

If you could take one bold step toward your goals, what would it be?

When you approach journaling with curiosity, you begin to notice patterns, strengths, and opportunities for growth. It’s not just about writing—it’s about listening to your inner voice and finding clarity in your own story

Use this practice to reconnect with yourself and your purpose. Your thoughts can guide you toward greater understanding and intentional action.
